Reading Contest

The past two weeks, and over three weekends, Lily's entire first grade class has been doing a reading competition. I kind of dreaded this contest.  Lily (and Jake & I) has had to work hard at reading.  She is doing better every week, but it hasn't come easily-naturally-quickly for her. So when she came home with the reading contest rules, Jake had a BRILLIANT idea.  We set a reasonable goal for her of 100 books.  We told her that if she reached her goal, we would have a family pizza party. Now I have to let you know that one classmate read over 100 books in just the first weekend. So her having her own goal helped her not get discouraged when others were so far ahead.

Lily worked very hard these past two weeks. She even had a great attitude overall and was self motivated, the majority of the time. Last Friday, she passed 100 books.  Even though the contest ended on Monday, March 20, we had our pizza party on Friday night.  Lily picked homemade stromboli for dinner and we watched Mary Poppins. Lily read a grand total of 131 books!

We are so proud of you Lily!

Grandpa & Grandma come to NC

Jake's parents were just here visiting for the past week.  They haven't been down here to visit for three years, back when we painted the exterior of our house. A lot has changed since then. We had a packed week; here's some of what we did.

Right away Thursday morning, Ella had a zwieback lesson from Grandma.  Grandma is great at baking bread!
While the bread rose, we went and saw Jake at his downtown office.  When we got back home it was time to form the zweiback. Ella really did a great job.  She loves learning & helping in the kitchen.

Friday, February 17, was Mom's birthday.  We had a birthday waffle breakfast and presents.
In the morning we saw the Arboretum and shopped at Blue Moon.  Jake worked a half day, so while the littles napped at home with me, the others headed to Bitty & Beau's Coffee. We then had a birthday dinner at Bluewater, down on the inter-coastal waterway.  After dinner we came home and enjoyed cherry pie, Mom's favorite.

Saturday morning Dad & Jake golfed while Mom had a massage.

In the afternoon we headed to Wrightsville Beach & the Oceanic Pier.

Monday was President's Day and we all went to Topsail Beach.  We hunted for shark's teeth! I think we came home with 15 or more.

Tuesday we went downtown and enjoyed a walk on the Riverwalk & Pier 33.
Wednesday we got to have lunch with Lily at school, before heading to the airport.

Jake 36

TODAY Jake turned 36!
We love him so much and tried to celebrate him the best we could.

Ella, my HUGE helper in the kitchen, helped me make his cake on Friday afternoon.  And why not help?  Helpers get to lick the bowl! Chocolate cake with peanut butter frosting and topped with Reese's.  It's so good.  We make it almost every year for Jake's birthday.

Lily & Ella helped me set up the "party" Friday night.  Then Saturday morning we had a family breakfast complete with waffles, nutella, strawberries & whipped cream.

Now, we also had a new concrete driveway poured today. Not what I would pick to do on my birthday, but it was what Jake picked.  We've been wanting to do this for a while.  So Jake & the girls spent most of the day outside.  I kept the littles inside and out of the wet concrete!

We enjoyed dinner all together with some dear friends of ours.  Jake picked the dinner menu and then we finally got to dive into THE cake!

We love you Jake - Daddy! Happy 36th Birthday!

quilts from Grandma

Jake's mom has made quilts for all of her grand-kids.  I remember when Lily's quilt first came in the mail.  Then I remember picking out Ella's fabrics and getting her nursery ready.  Well, we (me & ALL 4 kids) went and selected fabrics this fall for the little's quilts.

#babyB is into doggies and football so we ran with that inspiration.

#babyS's nickname is a bird, so I found a cute bird print for the back.  She was also born in December so we found a cute accent print with Christmas words on it.

Both quilts came in the mail this past week.
We love them! Thank you Grandma!

coffee bean

Currently, this is #babyB's favorite "car," and even though we call it a helicopter, he calls it "coffee bean."  It's so cute and it makes us laugh.

Christmas at Home 2016

Once again, we had a wonderful Christmas celebrating the birth of our Savior.
Jon, Emily & Blake arrived Friday afternoon.  It was so fun having them here with us for Christmas.

Christmas Eve...We continued our tradition of our family advent calendar for December (the activities vary from year to year but some remain the same) and opening our Christmas Eve Box.  And once again, I had cones & frosting in the box for making Christmas trees, or a Santa hat.

Auntie Em & I (Meg) did one too.
#babyB decided to "eat?" most of his.

We even played a math game with Auntie Em.

Later that evening we went to our Christmas Eve Gathering at The Bridge.
It was a great way to remember what Christmas is all about - THE greatest gift ever given.
The girls even sang "Joy to the World" with a children's choir.

Christmas morning...we were up early.  But it's fun with kids. They are so excited.  We opened gifts from our immediate family, while the Hight's slept in.  Lily & Ella used their own money, from their piggy banks, and went shopping, with Daddy, for sibling presents.  They did a great job picking out thoughtful gifts for each of their siblings. Here is Benny opening one of his gifts.

We enjoyed a leisurely brunch, while the babies napped.
Yes, we're still in our jammies!

Lily requested monkey bread. Ella requested scones.  Jake requested chocolate chip scones. We enjoyed some of our family favorites. After brunch, we Skyped with family and opened gifts from them.

It was a beautiful day so we decided to walk to the park and burn off some energy (i.e. all that sugar).

These two are only 3 months apart...and lots of pounds, like 5+ pounds.

We had an early Christmas dinner. Skyped with more family & opened more gifts. And then used Ella's new tea set for a tea party ("tea" and peppernuts) before bed.

just in time for Christmas

She lost ONE of her front teeth.
We've had to explain the "All I Want for Christmas is my Two Front Teeth." She's heard that comment a lot!
