A recipe from Ella

Today was Science Tuesday, at our house. Our experiment was that each of the big girls could create a recipe.  Mom and the little kids were the taste testers. Remember my summer sanity? well, we are doing that again this summer but have changed up a few of the days.
Lily decided to make Num Noms by using vanilla wafers, then painting on them with food coloring and decorating them with various edible treats.  Ella wanted to bake a cake.  We talked through what ingredients she would want and then Mom helped with the measurements.  Ella was thinking 1 cup for each ingredient. So cute!
Here is how it came out of the oven.  We did a taste test and it was good!  Kind of fudgy.

Fast forward three days, Ella wanted to make it again.  We decided to double the recipe to make a 9" round cake. We also talked about how to change it to a more cake-like consistency and not so dense.  We added some baking powder.  Here is Ella's final recipe:

Ella's Chocolate Cake
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup applesauce OR pumpkin
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips
  • Mix as for cake, fold in chocolate chips.  Pour batter into a greased 9" round pan. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean.
