summer learning

Do you remember how we usually have a summer plan at our house? Well, this summer WE ALL needed a break. However, I did want to make sure we did TWO things:  (1) lots of reading and (2) keep up on our math facts.  I decided we'd use the library's summer reading plan, with the free coupons, to spur on reading.  Then Jake & I talked and we decided to do a multiplication challenge for Lily & Ella to know their times tables from 0-12.  Super proud of BOTH the girls for doing AWESOME at both summer reading and completing their multiplication tables.

Lily completed the multiplication challenge on July 7. This was review for her as she learned her times tables during 3rd grade. The review was still a challenge for her.
I assigned an amount they would earn for each number. For instance the 2's were only $.25, but the 12's were $2. In total, they could EARN $10 plus a pack of gum once completed. This incentive worked well for both girls.

Books read from Tuesday at 4pm to Friday at 11am - WOW!

FREE insomnia cookie - thanks to NHC library

Ella completed her multiplication challenge TODAY - this was a big challenge for her as she had only done grouping through 3's. They had just started 4's when we went to all online in March. So proud of her!

Our 12th Anniversary

We're back from a night away to celebrate our 12th ANNIVERSARY.

A sweet friend of ours said she'd watch the kids, we asked her early June, so we could do an overnight date for our anniversary. It was so nice to have uninterrupted time together. Dates have been minimal, like one, since COVID-19 happened. We have had two other times we needed a sitter: (1) to attend a 40th birthday dinner party and (2) to attend a funeral. We were very thankful for an overnight DATE!

Our sitter came Saturday around 1pm. Jake booked us a room at The Waterway at WB. We headed there to park the Jeep and then we took out the paddle boards, borrowed from other sweet friends, on the Intercoastal Waterway. We did paddle boards a few years ago for our 9th anniversary as well. Later that evening we walked across the bridge to Poe's Tavern for dinner.

Jake's pick - Rue Morgue

We went for a walk after dinner, then sat at the intercoastal side for awhile and also over on the beach. After sunset, we grabbed ice cream. Saturday morning we tried paddle surfing - we are no good. We had a wonderful brunch at The Famous Toastery, but we forgot to take pictures. Afterwards, we drove to Trails End to park and try the paddle boards around Masonboro. Meg may have taken the scenic route. It was hard work fighting the wind, the changing tide and the boat's wakes, but we had fun.

Still full from our brunch, we enjoyed coffee at Bespoke that afternoon and were home by 4:30pm to squeeze our kids and hear all about the fun they had with Miss Jessie! What a blessing she is to our family.

Wren lost her FIRST TOOH

This morning, while Wren was eating breakfast, I noticed that you could see one of her bottom middle permanent teeth poking through the gums. We checked the tooth in front of it and sure enough, it was wiggly. Wren was so excited - her first wiggly tooth! All day she kept checking to see if it was still wiggly and saying, "Mom, I can't believe I have a wiggly tooth."

Our current wiggly tooth club as of 9am.

Per Wren's request, Daddy pulled it out after dinner!
She is definitely our youngest child to lose a tooth - 4 1/2 years old.

Sunset at WB

Thursday afternoon, Jake texted me with a great idea - "let's do a sunset adventure to the beach tonight." Yes! Around 7pm, we loaded up and headed to the beach. It was marvelous. So beautiful - nothing like it. We even made some friends and got to see a pod of dolphins.

Father's Day 2020

We celebrated THIS guy today and all weekend.

Father's Day Breakfast: sausage potato egg bake, orange zest scones, oranges and coffee.

Gifts and cards after breakfast.

Later we enjoyed lunch OUT AT PT's Grille, Jake's pick!

The rest of the day was enjoyed at the pool and spending time with friends and family. We are so thankful for Jake and all he is to our family. He is an amazing father and we really know he is the BEST DAD EVER.

Lily Anne, T E N

Somehow we have a TEN year old! I really can't believe how quickly these TEN years have gone. Lily loves art and reading. She is very creative. She loves to swim, skateboard and go for bike rides. She is a leader. She is not afraid to try new things. She has grown up and matured so much this past year.

We have told our girls that they can choose to get their ears pierced when they turn 10. Lily has been counting down the days, we went ahead and started the birthday festivities, on Monday, with ear piercing.

We started off her actual birthday morning with opening presents.

Birthday breakfast: waffle iron french toast

Happy 10th Birthday, Lily Anne!

Unfortunately, we are having a lot of rain right now so were not able to do a few of Lily's favorite outdoor activities like the beach and pool. However we had a fun rainy day. Lily was able to talk with some of our family who called with birthday messages. We video chatted with Grandpa & Grandma Tuttle. We also FaceTimed our sweet friends in Africa - that was fun! Lily was sung to from NC, MN, WI, and Africa today!
We did enjoy a quick trip around our park before lunch to get out and get some exercise. After lunch we went to Claire's so Lily could spend some of her birthday money on earrings. We usually let the kids pick a movie to watch on their birthday. Lily picked Princess Bride and we watched it in the afternoon since it was a rainy day. We also played Dutch Blitz, a birthday gift from Auntie Bek, multiple times today and did some coloring.

Birthday dinner: at ISLANDS

Birthday dessert: 3 ingredient cookies (banana, oats, chocolate chips) with Lewis Farms banana ice cream in between - YUM!

Happy 10th Birthday, Lily Anne!

School's OUT for Summer

We just finished out our last 3 days of school - Praise Jesus!
Lily had one more Flat Teacher's project.

WEDNESDAY, June 3 was our final day of school. I am so proud of these kids. They adjusted well to all being at home since March 13. Lily & Ella have been mostly self-motivated and eager to learn. Of course, we have had some rough moments, but overall they have worked so hard and with a good attitude! Benny and Wren played well while Mom was busy helping the girls with their lessons and schoolwork. They finished out their "k4 at home" a few weeks ago.

4th & 2nd grade COMPLETE

The last "Drawing with Miss Welsh" class.
All my kids have really enjoyed these weekly art lessons. It's been so fun!

Wednesday afternoon we went thru the Krispy Kreme drive thru for a FREE donut for National Donut week (National Donut day is Friday) and then headed to the pool to swim for the afternoon. This was our SCHOOL's OUT PARTY!

FRIDAY all Bridge Kids and Bridge Students were invited to Boombalatti's for a FREE ice cream to celebrate the end of the school year. So sweet and thoughtful of our church to do this - we love The Bridge Church.

When asked about finishing the school year, at home, this verse came to my mind.
"This is the LORD's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes."

Ella Taylor, E I G H T

We celebrated THIS SWEET girl turning EIGHT today!

She still loves horses and even wrote a few poems about horses this past week.

Ella opened presents before breakfast.

All the girls slept in horse shirts for Ella's horse themed birthday.

Ella's birthday breakfast choices: cinnamon rolls, scrambled eggs, mango

What a JOY Ella is to our family.

Some more of the day's festivities included: video chatting with Grandpa & Grandma Tuttle while Ella opened the gifts they sent, lunch outside on the porch, a bike ride, hours of fun at the pool, Ella's birthday dinner at Island's followed by a horse movie at home. And the day was topped off with homemade cookie ice cream sandwiches, using Ella's recipe.
