Before & After - Lily's Room

I only have one accessible BEFORE picture of Lily's room.
The flooring in here wasn't too bad, but the floor in the hallway, right outside of Lily's room was rotted.  The air handler is in a closet in the hallway.  It leaked for a long time.  When Jake ripped up the flooring in the hallway & Lily's room, he realized that the laminate flooring was the ONLY thing keeping us from falling through the floor.  In fact, someone DID fall thru the floor - we think it was the termite inspector.  Ouch!  Jake had to replace the sub-floor.  Jake had to do the same thing in the hall bathroom.

Before & After - Living Room

Let's try something new today....how about some direct comparison shots!

BEFORE - the living room:
As I mentioned HERE, in the above picture you can barely see the opening down into the former den/current playroom.  I know we have a good picture of it on our old hard-drive. It was a 28" opening with an archway.

AFTER pictures:
We just love our "new" piano!  Lily loves to play & sing....so does Ella.

very special painting. My Grandma painted this from a picture taken of Lily at the beach back in May.  It was Lily's birthday gift from them.  It goes perfectly with our collected shells from Wrightsville Beach. I am currently looking for a frame for it.

BEFORE -  Cut outs into the entryway & kitchen.

AFTER:

BEFORE - The below picture is taken from standing at the archway down into the den.

AFTER - We just love how open the floor plan is now.

BEFORE - entryway
Some of the in progress demolition is documented HERE.

AFTER:

I have so enjoyed cutting fresh hydrangea from our yard this summer.

A few more AFTER pictures:

Just the other week, Jake found the lamp in the foreground, at ReStore.  It was a burgundy color.  He spray painted it for me to match our decor.

Before & After - Master Bedroom

We had such a nice Saturday!  As I said earlier, Monday was kind of crazy.  In fact, a lot of our life has been hectic recently with getting the house as ready as possible to refinance.  Now that we have the appraisal done, we needed to do something FUN as a FAMILY!  Saturday morning we headed to the beach with some friends.  This is only the second time we have been to the beach with Jake.  It was wonderful.  We are so blessed to live a few minutes from the beach!

This is our current master bedroom.  Eventually (possibly next spring), the girls will share this room.  We will hopefully begin remodeling the back of the house this fall.  That back area will be our master bedroom suite.  So here it is - BEFORE pictures:
The house was listed as 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 half bathrooms.  We tore out the 2 half bathrooms.  There is NO earthly reason why we would need 5 toilets in one house (2400 square feet).  Who wants to clean FIVE toilets?  Not I.  The door on the far right is where a half bath was.  The previous owners had already capped off the toilet & sink, but the plumbing was still there.

This picture is taken from the doorway into the bedroom.  The door straight ahead steps down into the master bathroom.  We walled that up.  We made a doorway in the back of the house so this bathroom is accessible from the back area - which will eventually be our master bedroom suite.  Oh....that carpet was nasty.

AFTER pictures:
Standing at the doorway into the room.  The door that used to go down into the bathroom was where my blue end table is.

Former half bath - now our closet. It also nice having the window & natural light in there.

We went with the same Shaw carpet in all 3 bedrooms as well as the playroom.  I also tried to pick a paint color that will work when the girls share the room.  I have some fun plans for that, can't wait!

Before & After - Playroom

Our playroom is on the same end of the house as the playroom bathroom & the kitchen pantry.  This was originally the garage when the house was built.  Down here in NC, a lot of people convert their garage into a den or bedroom.  BEFORE pictures:
Notice the drop ceiling & the linoleum floor that looks like wood parquet.

It seems that when converting the garage into usable space, a lot of people either put in a sliding glass door, french doors or in our case another front door in where the garage door was. Look how little Ella was - this was the end of October.  To the right of me is a small two step corner stairway up into the living room (with a wrought iron railing).  They had a small 28" opening with an archway.

The view from standing at the archway.

In Progress AFTER pictures:
We took down the drop ceiling, but then there was a seam all the way around the room.  We ended up putting up a white trim piece to cover it up & I really love how it looks.

Lily's new horse from Aunt Anna.  This may eventually go on the screened in porch/patio.

We are looking for furniture for in here.  I am thinking two small loveseats (Ikea type) or a loveseat & a couple of chairs.  We are checking Craig's List but it isn't a necessity at this point.

Jake enlarged the original opening & built the steps. The girls LOVE to play on those steps! I am also so glad we chose carpet for in here.
The ceiling is in progress.  We are planning on doing a plank board ceiling in here & in the dining room.

The lockers - story HERE.  I am still in love with them.  They now store games, art supplies & play dough.
The foosball table that Jake redid.  Eventually this may be hung on the exterior brick wall as art - when we screen in our porch/patio or it may be made into a playable coffee table.

We were planning on taking out this door & replacing it with two windows back in May, but then THIS happened.  It was a little more important to address the foundation (under the dining room) issue.  Home owner's insurance is a must!  We are hoping to replace ALL the old windows this fall.

That door goes into the playroom bathroom.

Before & After - Playroom Bathroom

This bathroom was gross - major understatement!  The house sat empty for at least a year & a half, possibly two years.  The house had been winterized. Many hours have been spent scrubbing this home.

BEFORE picture: (Jake took a ton of before pictures of the house, but then our laptop died.  Most of the before pictures are still stuck on the hard-drive.  We'll get them off someday!)

AFTER pictures - We used this as our main bathroom until we finished the Hall Bath.  For 3 months, Lily had to take a shower & Ella had her bath in the kitchen sink.  We ALL were very excited the first night we could use the bathtub!  We do have a third full bathroom in the back of the house.  However, that area does not have HVAC & we did not turn on the hot water heater.
This is also flooring that we ripped out from somewhere else in the house.  Jake then taped off the squares & painted them, using leftover paint from Lily's room at our old house.

We did end up keeping the drop ceiling in this bathroom.  We would have had to move the vent up into the attic & at that point, we had much bigger fish to fry.  Someday I am sure, Jake will decide to take out the drop ceiling.  In the meantime, Jake cut drywall pieces to fit in the ceiling & added recessed lighting.  We then painted the ceiling a lighter shade of gray (leftover from Ella's room).

The shelving was already here when we purchased the house.

This wall is where the doorway was that went into the mudroom/pantry.  I am still looking for a lot of art for this home.

Before & After - Kitchen Pantry

This is the first house, that we have lived in, that has a pantry.  This is one of my favorite things!  In the past I have had to use a cabinet in my kitchen to store food. In our last house, I had my cake plates stored above the kitchen cabinets. Since we have had very limited space, I have not been able to buy in bulk (which can save a lot of money).

BEFORE pictures:  See through the open door at the end of the kitchen?  There was a mudroom/breezeway - not really sure how the former owners used the space.  There was also a doorway from the mudroom into the bathroom (that is the white door in the back middle of the below picture.

Brick stairs up into the kitchen, some shelving & then the doorway into the bathroom. Oh & some really gross blue carpet.

Drop ceiling - This end of the house is the original garage that they converted into usable space.  They put a drop ceiling in this entire end of the house (den, den bathroom, mudroom).  We took it out, except in the bathroom due to the vent.  That is a project for another day.

AFTER pictures:

We saved some laminate flooring that we ripped out of other parts of the house.  We put it down in the pantry & in the bathroom (which is on the other side of that wall).  In the pantry, we used two separate kinds of flooring to do a stripe look.  We used leftover paint from our former kitchen.

At some point, Jake will be adding one more shelf up where the seam is from the drop ceiling, as well as a shelf above where we walled up the former doorway.

Behind this chevron door is one of the water heaters.

I found this little shelf at a yard sale for $3.  I have most of my baking stuff on it.  Lily "helps" me bake.

I also like having all my aprons up on hooks.  Easy to grab & use.
